Run Rabbit Run – A Wise Voice is Quiet Today

Iconic writer John Updike dead at age 76 – TODAY: Book news – MSNBC.com.

John Updike was full of wisdom and helped me understand so much of the subtle logic of life that makes it so confusing for those of us who can see clearly.

Below is a collection of his greatest quotes.   I will paraphrase one thing he said that I can’t remember word for word and can’t find anywhere, but have thought about all my life.   It goes something like this:

The old world around us is always dying and going away.  A new world that we don’t know is always being born forming all around us.  And because we only know the old world and not the new, we feel like we are losing something, not realizing that we are gaining just as much.

Here are other quotes from John Updike:

  1. We do survive every moment, after all, except the last one.
  2. America is a vast conspiracy to make you happy.
  3. We take our bearings, daily, from others. To be sane is, to a great extent, to be sociable.
  4. Most of American life consists of driving somewhere and then returning home, wondering why the hell you went.
  5. Customs and convictions change; respectable people are the last to know, or to admit, the change, and the ones most offended by fresh reflections of the facts in the mirror of art.
  6. I love my government not least for the extent to which it leaves me alone.
  7. Religion enables us to ignore nothingness and get on with the jobs of life.
